People often associate Las Vegas with over indulgence and excess and certainly their point seemed to come true with the story about Joey Chestnut! This eating machine made the Vegas headlines when he took part in the first ever Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Competition. You didn’t read the headline wrong, it was a meatball eating contest! The restaurant owner Steve Martorano came up with the idea, “I was debating whether to have a cheese steak eating contest or a meatball eating contest,” Martorano explained. Apparently their meatballs are pretty popular in their restaurant. During 2007 Gourmet magazine said they had the best meatballs.

 

Joey Chestnut’s brilliant effort even had him breaking the World Record for meatball eating when he ate 6.25lbs, which equates to 50 meatballs, all in a matter of ten minutes. The competition took place at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Vegas and was a Major League Eating-sanctioned competition. The competition prize wasn’t to be sniffed at either because the winner was set to take home 1500 US Dollars. Joey is quite an achiever in competitive eating contests, so the result wasn’t totally unexpected. In the past he has won contests where he has had to eat chicken, hotdogs and pizzas!

 

The competition was a utensil only rule, which means no stuffing the meatballs in by hand! Joey who is over six feet tall and weighs in at a mighty 218lbs only managed to grab the title by just one meatball, and coming in second place was Pat Bertolli who ate 49 balls. Third place prize went to Sonya Thomas, who for this contest was a bit of a flyweight as she only weighs in at 105 pounds, but managed to still consume 42 meatballs. She is certainly somebody to watch in future competitions, or maybe she was just hungry after her time playing poker!
