Find Culinary School

Become a Great Chef

Typing top culinary degrees or the like into a search does not give any information on rankings or what schools give out the best degree. I am interested in restaurant/hospitality management and am looking for the best option around PA.

You can find listing of restaurant management college courses in this site – collegefinder.my-age.net
It also has info about each, tips to apply and which salary should you expect (to comparison)

I have to admit, I've had a rocky start..I didn't really consider my future until this year(my junior year) I know if I try really hard I'll be in the top 10 percent of my class. Last year without trying much I was in the top 28 percent and I only had on pre-ap class: This year I have 2 AP classes and on pre-ap class..I'm doing pretty well. But the first two six six weeks I had two C's…on the last six weeks I have all A's with one B. I'm going to try really hard after Christmas Break..and study SATs every weekend. I'm Key Club(quite active in it) and I'm gonna volunteer at a hospital this summer.
But I don't compete in my school…is that bad?
I probably will with Culinary Arts next year.
Also, Rice doesn't offer languages? How come?

I don't know, why don't you contact Rice or something, :) good luck

How long is culinary school?

i might be taking culinary school, on top of medical school, because i love to cook and i really want to pursue my cooking career. thanks for all the answers.

It depends on the school and if you are going for a specific degree. For instance, my daughter is a sophomore in high school, is currently taking culinary arts and a pastry class at her high school, and plans on taking more culinary classes for her junior & senior year. Upon graduation she plans on going to the Culinary Institute of America (C.I.A.) at Greystone in St. Helena, CA and will be going for 21 months to get her A.O.S. degree (Associates in Occupational Studies) and will continue her education for her B.P.S. degree (Bachelor of Professional Studies) at their Hyde Park Campus in Hyde Park, NY. The B.P.S. is 38 months from start to finish. And somewhere in between (she's not sure if she wants to do this first or after the culinary studies) she wants to get her degree in Baking & Pastry Arts….this can be 21 months for an A.O.S. degree of 38 months for a B.P.S. degree. And at the C.I.A. you also have to do an externship (through their approved list) when taking the culinary arts classes and this externship is between 18 to 24 or 26 weeks. I've provided a link for you below.

I remember years ago my neighbors son wanted to be a chef and took classes in San Francisco and it was a 2 year program. Unfortunately, he didn't finish. Shortly after starting his 4th semester he decided to drop out and his father still had to pay the full tuition which was $20,000.00 per semester.

There is also a place in Campbell, CA that contacted my daughter and their program is 8 months (it's a fast track program). This place is called the Professional Culinary Institute (P.C.I.). I've provided a link for this to give you an idea of a school that has shorter times compared to 2 years or more.

Best of luck to you!

Basically I need to decide between two different schools; but really the decision is much more than that…
i can go to Johnson and Wales or the Art Institute (AI)

the difference between the two is at Johnson and Whales I’ll get the very best culinary education i could possibly get, from the very best teachers.
And at AI ill get a degree…at a MUCH smaller cost of course.

Now most people would say “Shoot for the stars go to J+W..go to school in the day and work at night….its worth it!”
But personally I’m not sure it is. I am not a very future oriented person, I cant even see myself 4 years into the future…in my mind its like I’m going to die still going to that school..class all day, work all night….and that thought doesn’t really sit well with me…

Going to AI i could finish in two years, without having to work unless i want to. I’m not really aiming to be a Top Chef, so would I really need a Top Chef degree? Right now in my life I’m only aiming to get by.

so question is…Should I go with what feels right with me right now (AI)
or go to J+W and be completely goin’ against my mind (love that song BTW..if you havent heard it maybe you should :P )(Built to Spill)…and more or less go with what ‘most’ people would consider the ‘better’ decision?

-just looking for some thoughtful input
Thank You :]]

**also, It would be nice if you could “Star” this question so i could get more readers :]
Thank you to those of you who gave some input.

But I had a bit of an epiphany right now :p
I am going to enroll in le cordon bleu….i guess it could be considered a middle ground between the two school…which is good, seeing as how i cant choose :p

thank you again :]]

Trust me, you want to choose J&W! AI is really a crappy school…. I know lots of people who went there and consider it their biggest mistake.

you see, i had been working hard on my gingerbread house for about 3 weeks in my culinary arts class. the school provided everything, even the candy for decorations. i went outside the box and i bought some candy for my house with my own money, and i worked hard on the house. i finished it last week on Friday, and i didnt get the chance to take a proud picture with my house. it got put into auction along with everybody else's houses. i came back to school on Monday, and i saw a bet on my house….i couldnt take a picture with it still, so i brought my camera on Tuesday and then my house was gone!!! it got sold before all the other houses, at first i though it got stolen, but no, someone bought it (the rest of the houses were still there). then they told me it sold for top price…..that made me feel great, but i dont have any memory of my house in picture.

should i be more happy or sad….this seems silly, i know, but i worked hard on that house.
awwwwww…you guys are so sweet!! so so sweet……yes, i can make a new one, but it just wouldnt be the same, and i would give up. i dont have all the equipment that takes to make one in my house….but hey, you guys are right….i should be happy that my house got chosen first :) . you guys cheered me up, thank you very much! i dont like the cell phone pics, thats why i didnt use it. but ill get over it. i still have the memory in my mind, and i do feel proud and good. you guys made me feel even better!! ill never be able to choose a best answer for this one, im sorry.
i doubt i can ge tahold of whoever bought my house (i have no idea who it is), but i will try asking my teacher! thats a great idea!!

That's quite sad really & I think they are abit mean, you made some thing that you was really proud off & yes I agree with you,you deseverd a photo,it would of given you encourigment,it's abit like a slap in the face really, but you be proud you done a good job but if I was you I would tell your class teacher how you feel, then hopefuly they will be abit more sensative next time..plus they can probaly buy an instamatic camera so then this way every body gets a photo..Well done to you thoe.x
